BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox will play their third intrasquad game of summer training camp here at Fenway Park on Saturday.
Righty Ryan Weber, who is expected to begin the season as Boston’s No. 3 starter, will pitch.
The game is being streamed on Twitter. Watch here:
Nathan Eovaldi started here Thursday, then Martin Perez pitched Friday. Eovaldi likely will start Opening Day, followed by Perez in Game 2 and Weber in Game 3. Boston then would either use two openers or a starter and opener in the rotation’s fourth and fifth spots.
The Red Sox likely will be without left-handed starter Eduardo Rodriguez to begin the season as he recovers from coronavirus.
Weber is 1-5 with a 5.96 ERA in 11 career big league starts. He went 2-4 with a 5.09 ERA in 18 outings (three starts) for Boston last year.
Robinson Leyer will start for the other team. The 27-year-old Leyer is 28-43 with a 4.24 ERA in 236 minor league games (84 starts). He has never pitched in the major leagues. The spring training non-roster invitee is part of Boston’s 60-player pool, which is at 50 players.
Major League Baseball teams are preparing for the regular season with intrasquad games as they work out at their home ballparks in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Red Sox will open their abbreviated 60-game schedule July 24 against the Baltimore Orioles.
